6:24 am - All About the Snarry Reader
|
The Snarry Reader is a general resource for fans of the Snape/Harry pairing. On the sidebar you can find links to selected Snape/Harry stories, WsIP, and essays. You can also find interviews with popular authors and artists, genre story suggestions and other links of interest.
We are neither exactly a recs list nor a comprehensive pairing list. For a fuller explanation of what we're doing and the choices we make please check our FAQ.
These lists are works in progress. We are constantly adding new stories, art and meta, and periodically post a summary of recently added links.
We welcome feedback. This journal is meant to be a resource for the fandom so please let us know how we're doing. We certainly welcome suggestions.
WARNING: many of the stories and pictures we link to are rated NC-17 for adult content and so are inappropriate reading for minors.
Enjoy! Gaycrow, Regan_V, Painless J, and Perverse Idyll
Note: the Snarry Reader was originally founded by Aubrem. Although she's no longer an active mod, she continues to be our silent partner.

11:20 pm - List of Works in Progress
|
This is a list of Snape/Harry Works in Progress that we think are well worth following. More will be added as we read them. We have noted the stories that appear to have been abandoned and those that are updated on a regular basis. Some are closer to stories with sequels than one serialized story so please consider taking a look at them even if you don't normally read WIPs.
Please be warned that these are slash stories, many of which are rated NC-17 for adult content and so are inappropriate reading for minors.
Some of the links from the list take you directly to the stories. Where we know that the author or website owner prefers we link to their main page, we have done so. Therefore you may have to click a few links to get to the listed story. If anyone knows of any errors we have made in that regard please comment here and we'll fix it.
A
Acid and Sinick hello_hbp A mixed-media story, set after Voldemort's defeat. Snape is on the run, and Harry is looking for him. Lovely art included in each post. (Last update 29th March 2009)
Aethen- Unforgivable Promises
Plotty post-OOtP WIP. Good solid Snarry with the plot revolving around finding a way to deactivate Snape's and other ex-deatheater's dark marks after Voldemort discovers their betrayal. Good use of magic including legilimency and runes. Satisfyingly long, but apparently abandoned. (Last update 22nd July 2005)
Atrata- Strange Attraction
Post-HBP Snape/Harry. Harry's hunting horcruxes and it goes wrong. After a nasty fight in which he is badly hurt (his arm is rotting off) he is stunned and wakes up either Snape's prisoner or in his care. As is to be expected with a story by Atrata, Snape's motives are unclear and he is morality ambiguous. Intense, violent, another fantastically well-written wild ride of a WIP from the author of "In Between Days." (Last updated 3rd December 2005) - Maybe Someday
Author's Warning: Harry's 16. The sex is violent. Snape is a total and complete bastard and does some really terrible things. Etc etc. Author's notes: This is the sequel to In Between Days, and it's been something like 18 months in the writing. "Part One" is actually quite long (~15,000 words) and represents maybe half of what's written so far. I do want to finish this story someday. It may take me a very long time. If you're vehemently opposed to WsIP, you might want to not bother. On the other hand, if you liked IBD, I think you'll like this, too, even in its current unfinished state.
Atrata and Switchknife- Nights Nothings Please note: the authors have said that this WIP is on hiatus for the foreseeable future.
'Nights Nothings' is a Snape/Harry series co-authored by atrata (Harry) and switchknife (Severus). Summary: It's Harry's third Christmas at Hogwarts, and Sirius Black is on the loose. But is he the only enemy Hogwarts may be hiding? Harry pins his suspicions on Snape, but soon discovers that he's got a lot to learn... This is an alternate universe based on The Prisoner of Azkaban. The timelines split as soon as the Christmas break begins. Warnings: Sexual content, underaged sex and mild violence. Spoilers for HBP. An index of all the chapters can be found here.
C Captain Tulip- Let The Truth Sting Here or here
This is is a slow, subtle, and complex character study of both Harry and Snape. Set after the war, Snape is imprisoned in Azkaban, and only daily visits by Lupin (who brings him food) are keeping him alive. Lupin leaves for a trip to America, and recruits Harry to fill in for him as Snape's daily visitor for a while.
This is not a happy story. Harry is depressed and rootless after the war, and Snape becomes a lightening rod for Harry's anger and confusion over his own sexual identity. And Snape is unlovely, bitter, and sharp. But the chemistry between the two is complicated and compelling. The author is taking her time with this, developing their relationship carefully and completely. Recommended, if you're interested in something intelligent, bitter, and dark. (Last updated 11th May 2006)
D Darth Stitch- As You Wish
As Darth Stitch herself says: "this is a Snarry Fairy Tale ... a spoof of the Princess Bride ... pure silliness. And fluff. Lots of it. And maybe pirates too. Leave canon at the door." This is a very enjoyable piece of silliness, with much humour and lightheartedness. There are a few lovely cookies for the story at ff.net which deal with the back-story of "As You Wish". (Last updated 4th September 2006)
Deirdre Riordan- Striking Thirteen
This is the summary Deirdre supplies at the beginning of the story: Friday the 13th has some ... interesting effects on magic. Harry deals with the consequences. Eventual HP/SS. Currently rated PG-13, if that, for a little bit of language. And no, there's no relation to 1984 beyond the origin of the title. This is a confusing story, and it takes a while to work out what is going on. Harry is hit by a spell cast by Neville and wakes up the next day, after having "lived" for many years in a different "dream" reality. Each chapter alternates between the "dream" reality and Harry's "true" reality. Confusion aside, the story is well written, even though Harry's reaction to Snape, after what occurs in the inital stages of his "dream" reality, is questionable. However, if you can put that to one side, the story is entertaining and the plot moves along quickly. The story was initially updated regularly, but due to some RL problems, slowed down, and now seems to have been abandoned.
Dien- Season of Healing
One of the most popular "Snape rescues Harry from the Dursley's" stories, this WIP has unfortunately been abandoned. Nevertheless it's a fun read as Snape takes Harry home with him for the summer and we get to see a particularly inventive version of Snape's home. Includes magical animals and Snape's sister. J Jacquez H. Valentine- The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Harry becomes Snape's apprentice in Defence Against the Dark Arts after graduating from Hogwarts. Fascinating, amazing characterization as Snape is even more brutal than in canon and Harry chooses to stand with him. The story is divided into the five years of Harry's apprenticeship. Jacquez is part way into year two and has been stuck there a very long time. Last year she heavily revised the entire story. There is a livejournal community for this fic at sorcerers_app. In July 2004 Jacquez indicated she was planning to continue to work on the story, but unfortunately there haven't been any updates since then.
Jade- Insomnia Password required.
The password may be obtained from the Files section of Jade's Yahoo group. The story can also be found here at Jade's Live Journal, but you will need to be added as a "friend" to read it. Updated every month or so, this story is a delicious dance of flirtation, seduction, and hot teacher/student interaction. Virgin Harry, barely-in-control Professor Snape, this is Jade at her "we are here for the hot sex" best. (Last updated 28th March 2005)
JiM- Lest I Wither
A very good Snarry romance. Harry has been poisoned and only Snape can save him. There are three parts so far and the second two were long in coming. Still, it's satisfying as is. (Last updated November 2004)
K Kemantari (author's website)- The Proud Man's Contumely
Going to be Snape/Harry but begins with a touch of Remus/Harry. The story starts very strongly, beginning right after OotP. It's plotty with a canon feel, following up on Voldemort's use of legilimency. There's a scene near the beginning that ends with Harry on the floor staring at Snape's boots that is quite shiver-inducing. Eighteen chapters so far but hasn't been updated in a while, and appears to be abandoned.
M Midnight Blue- The Mirror of Maybe
Many people either love or hate this story. Harry returns to the past after accidentally living for years in the future. He returns as "War Mage Ash" and much Gary Stu-ism ensues. It's fun, especially Harry's courting of Snape. (Abandoned for a while, then updated in January 2006, and then again on the 30th December 2006)
V Vain- Thresh
This is a psychologically dark, complicated story. Snape desires Harry, and decides that Voldemort is the most likely lord to deliver Harry into his hands. Features a very unattractive, dark, IC Snape; Harry's plight here is heartwrenching, at points. Extremely dubious consent. (Last updated 9th June 2005)

11:30 pm - Review: Love Bites by Witling
|
Reviewed by Regan V
Title: Love Bites (links listed as "TNT Contribution fic #1") Rating PG, no warnings
Summary: After the war, Harry is hit by a stray love curse.
This one is a keeper. Like the same writer's Shame The Devil the writing style is deceptively simple. The tone is understated. And the lines she gives Snape, in particular, are just wonderful. witling is such a fine writer that she doesn't need to impress us with any tricks: she lays out her tale in a way that flows beautifully, with moments of humor, wit, and compassion that just gleam.
Both of her stories are meditations on love. And witling is gently amused by the very notion of romantic love, I can tell.
In these stories, love is inconvenient. Harry or Snape might wish they could avoid it, and yet they must come to terms with it as best they can. This is an almost classical view of love: as a form of little madness, sent to us unwanted. Played in a minor key of Snape/Harry. Lovely.

8:17 am - Sweet Nothings by Bysshe
|
Title: Sweet Nothings Author: Bysshe Rating: NC-17 Warnings: Strong adult content Story Link: here Author’s Livejournal: bysshe Author’s summary: This scene popped into my head when it occurred to me that I only seem to see dirty talk in fic when the characters decide to talk dirty, rather than the natural sort of rambling that I think often occurs without conscious decision--which doesn't always make sense and sometimes seems stupid and embarrassing when the heat of the moment has passed. Length: 680 words
Reviewer: Gaycrow
"Sweet Nothings" is an extremely sexy ficlet. It's told from Harry’s point of view, and we get to experience his feelings as Snape performs a very familiar task in bed. The two have apparently been together for a long time, and know what the other likes. Some years also appear to have passed since Harry was a student at Hogwarts, as we see Harry looking down at Snape’s limp grey-streaked hair , but this in no way affects either man’s performance.
Bysshe has given us some good, strong writing here. It’s red-hot - I was almost as breathless as Harry and Severus. A couple of quibbles - I'm not all that keen on the nickname Sev, or Harry's use of the word “baby”. I really can’t see the latter happening, but if I ignore that, I’d have to say this is one of the best PWPs I've read, with the two of them not just having sex, but perhaps more accurately, making love; and NOT in a sweetly sappy way ...

Title: There are three stories in this series: Finder's Fee, Spy's Game, and Winter's Sport. Author: gatewaygirl Rating: Oh, very NC 17 Warnings: Ambiguous consent, spanking, BDSM (B/D, D/s, S/M), minor character death. Summary: Snape and Harry enter a partnership, harvesting baselisk scales. Their partnership gradually becomes . . . .more comprehensive, and they begin an investigation to determine whether there is a spy within the Order's ranks.

The story is a slow-building mystery, which takes the time to explore and develop the relationship between Harry and Snape on the way. The writing is smooth and polished, and the story's well-crafted.
I think one reason I like the entire series is that although there are other writers who can imagine a Snape who is this cynical, tough-minded, and self-interested, there are almost no fanfiction Harries who are his match, when it comes to having these qualities. Harry is usually presented as being more idealistic, noble, or naive. This Harry is not, and I relish watching him interact with this Snape.
This Harry is sexually submissive (within set boundaries) but also willful, self-interested, and cynical. And this Snape is taking full advantage of the situation, while also feeling protective towards Harry. It's a lovely balance she strikes here, and one that is refreshingly free of any sentimentalism.
And the sex is beyond hot. Just saying.

10:17 pm - Review: "Duty Calls" by Elanor
|
Title: Duty Calls Author: Elanor Rating: NC 17 Warnings: not really. But it contains an image that is NOT worksafe.
Summary: Drafted in to save the wizarding world from peril, Harry and Snape cross paths in a most unusual situation.
Reviewer: Regan V
The premise sounds like crackfic, almost. Harry is bullied by Hermione into becoming a sperm donor. And you'll never guess who he runs into at the collection center. But it's not crackfic, at all. It's light-hearted, clever humor. The story isn't long, but it works very well. And it gets bonus points for originality.

10:02 pm - Review: "The Importance of Recordkeeping for the New Entrepreneur," by Adbaculum
|
Title: The Importance of Record Keeping for the New Entrepreneur Author: gnomad Pairings Snape/Harry, Snape/various Rating: NC 17. Warnings: for prostitution and cross-dressing.
Summary: Snape finds himself learning the tricks of a new trade. Harry finds himself in need of a good tradesman.
Reviewer: Regan V
Even if you're unemployable and a social pariah, there's always the oldest profession to fall back on. As Snape discovers here. This story has a droll humor, and a lot of bite. Harry is a rather clueless would-be customer of Snape's, and one of the joys of this piece is that the story shows us that Harry can be human, all too human. It's sexy and amusing and has a hopeful ending. Very nice indeed.

They don't include serious violence or non con (which you'll find in the "Dark and Twisted" topics box), and they don't involve character death or sheer tragedy (which is the "Cry Your Eyes Out" box). They just include . . . angst. Lovely, tense, edgy angst.

9:43 pm - A Touch of Infidelity
|
Infidelity is actually very common in RL, but is rarely explored in the often-idealized romantic world of fanfiction. And yet, this theme can result in beautiful angst, in the hands of a good writer.
The stories below all deal with the theme of infidelity, which one of us (Regan) finds interesting. How each one handles this issue varies: in some, Snape or Harry is cheating on the other, while in other stories one of them features as the third party (e.g., Harry is in a committed relationship with someone, and he's seeing Snape on the side), or the infidelity is even more complicated than that. What they have in common is that they're all unusual.

1:11 am - Two Birthdays by Rakina
|
Title: Two Birthdays Author: Rakina Rating: G Warnings: Pompous!Snape and Cheeky!Harry Story Link: here Author’s Livejournal: rakina Author’s summary: Severus Snape has something in common with the Queen, it seems. Length: 1200 words.
Reviewer: Gaycrow
Rakina has written a lighthearted, humorous little story, showing us a glimpse of Harry and Snape on holiday in wizarding Morocco.
Even on holidays, Snape stays true to himself. Despite their daily outings in the sun, Severus still looked every inch the Hogwarts teacher, still wearing his dark, full length robes, and his skin retained its odd sallow colour.
I love the thought of the two of them wandering through the casbah, discovering all sorts of wonderful and not so wonderful treasures, including a very interesting pestle and mortar.
Snape shows he hasn’t lost his Slytherin sneakiness by suggesting Harry buy the pestle and mortar as a birthday gift, even though Snape’s birthday was in January. He almost manages to pull the wool over Harry’s eyes by declaring that all Potions masters have an extra birthday, to celebrate ... Incendius Aconite, the greatest Potions Master of all time. He is almost a legendary figure, you know."
Harry has the last laugh, though - he isn’t quite as gullible as Severus thinks.

12:00 am - Review: "The Happy Half-Blood Prince," by Amanuensis
|
Reviewed by Regan V
Title: The Happy Half-Blood Prince Author amanuensis1 Rating: PG 13 Warnings: Nope.
Summary: After the war, Harry works through a few outstanding issues he still has with Snape.
Normally, I tend to sneer at your noble Mr. Rochester! Snape. Snape is not a gothic romantic hero, oh no. Except when Amanuensis chooses to recast him, in her own fashion.
Harry goes to visit Snape, who is living within a rather restrictive parole, and things develop from there. This is simply heart-filling. Lovely. Moving.
And you know, normally if someone said, "oh, a heart-filling Snarry featuring a noble! Snape," I would run in the opposite direction. I have read so many, many failed, unpersuasive attempts at writing a noble! Snape, both in the Snarry and Snape/Hermione genres. But this one works. It just works. After I finished it, I was somehow reminded of Mr. Rochester. Except this is Snape. And I went back and looked at the story notes and noticed something I'd missed in my haste to get to a new Snarry by Amy: she says it's a tribute of sorts to Jane Eyre.
And so it is. And it works beautifully.

9:58 pm - Review: "The Soul Adores," by Maeglin Yedi
|
Title: The Soul Adores Author: maeglinyedi Pairings Harry/Tom, Harry/Snape Rating: NC 17 Warnings: dubious consent, manipulation, underage (Harry turns 17 in the story), minor character deaths. Harry hunts horcruxes here. Or does he? This story gives us a brilliant new twist on horcruxes, as Harry discovers that the locket is a rather . . . interactive horcrux, along the lines of the diary in Book 2. The plot is tricksy, and all three of the main characters engaged me deeply. The story is quite entertaining during the first half. But when it gets to the last section it acquires a level of power and drama that, well, makes "entertaining" seem too paltry an adjective. This story concludes on a note of subtle, velvet-soft, gentle horror. Don't get me wrong: none of the main characters dies, and many people might even consider this to have a "happy ending." But the ending was simply a gut-punch for me (and one that I refuse to spoil), that left me shuddering. And crossing myself. Oh, Harry.
