FAQ
1. Is The Essential Snarry Reader a rec list or a comprehensive list of all Snape/Harry stories (art, meta)?

Something in between. It's a list of all Snape/Harry stories we like. That includes the best stories (those you would normally find recced) but also stories that are just "good." Those good stories might have flaws but someone who likes the pairing would enjoy them anyway. Imagine a good friend messaging you one evening desperate for a Snarry because she's read them all. You pick something out of your bookmarks - it's not perfect, but it will give her her fix. This goes for art and meta as well.

2. If the list is meant to be all "good" Snape/Harry stories why isn't my story on there?

Very possibly because we haven't read it yet. Patience! It's also possible that we've read it and didn't like it. There's no getting around taste. Really though, it takes a while for all of us to read a story. It could be that eventually one of us will find it and add it. Again, this goes for art and meta as well.

3. Why do some of the stories on your list suck?

There's no accounting for taste. It only takes one of us to add a story and none of us has veto power. We each appreciate different aspects of stories. Some only like stories that are well-written, some value a good emotional ride despite uneven language, some like edginess, some cleverness, some fluffyness. We're hoping that our broad tastes means the list contains something for everyone.

4. Why do some stories have reviews and others don't?

We add stories as soon as we find them. The reviews take longer, that's all. Check back at a later date and you may find the review has been added.

5. How about warnings?

We took a poll and thought hard about warnings. This is what we came up with:

  • For those stories we currently link to that don't have any warnings (like those at ISF and Skyehawke), we'll look for alternative links that do have the author's warnings (perhaps the author's website or another archive). We'd appreciate any help you can give us with that. A message can be left here.

  • For those stories for which we can't find a story page that includes the author's authorized warnings, we'll either add our own warnings on the Master List or link to the archive's general author page that does include the warnings.

  • We'll respect the author's wishes regarding warnings about character deaths and not add extra warnings when the author specifically asks us not to although we might put heavy hints and possibly spoilers in our reviews where we think they're needed. We won't say exactly what happens in the story. The wording would probably be along the lines of "Heavy angst, sensitive readers beware." Or "NOT a happy story." Reviews are behind links and not on the Main List and we'll add a sentence on the main page warning that reviews may contain spoilers.

  • We're always more than happy to work with any author regarding the way we characterize their story. Our goal is to find a compromise on this question where possible. If for any reason we and the author can't agree, we'll remove the story from our list. We don't expect this to ever happen.

    6. I don't see the stories listed in your "Near Snarry" section on the Master List. Well, a couple are. What's the deal?

We created the "Near Snarry" section, including Threesomes, Severitus and Gen/preslash/ambiguous so that we could list good stories that otherwise don't qualify for the [info]snarry_reader. We enjoy the dynamic between Snape and Harry in all its forms - they don't necessarily have to fall in bed for it to be interesting. We list these stories in separate posts that we link from the sidebar but as a general rule we don't put them on the Master List. However, there may be a few stories that we had already put the on Master List before we created the gen/preslash category. We won't take those off, they are sort of "grandfathered" in.

    7. Some of those gen stories you list seem pretty slashy to me.

Well, gen/preslash/ambigous tends to be a matter of intepretation. What is friendship or rivalry to one person, reads as high UST to another. We don't try to sort out the gen from the preslash or ambiguous. We just use our best judgment - if the slash reads to us as nonexistent or only hinted at in a way that might be one's imagination we will probably put it on the gen/preslash/ambigous list. Of course, you are a slasher - finding subtext is what you do, so it's no surprise that many of the gen stories come across as slashy. : )
