    7:42a - Interview with Luthien
As a writer, and as one of the creators of the Severus Snape Fuh Q Fest, [info]luthien can rightly be called one of the founders of the Snape/Harry ship. I am thrilled she agreed to be interviewed for the [info]snarry_reader.

Summary:Harry's cursed, and he comes to Snape to ask for a cure.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

In this long, romantic story, a grownup Harry returns to Hogwarts to ask Snape to cure him of a curse. I love the opening scene as the sexual tension takes Snape by surprise and Harry sees his opportunity. As ever, Aucta is all about the dialogue as Harry and Severus banter and flirt over a course of days while Snape brews and administers the necessary potion. The interaction becomes more serious as Snape's past comes into play and finally a bit drama gives us a nice emotional climax.

Aucta obviously loves the character of Severus Snape, in Harry's words:

" for all the mockery Snape cast his way over the melodrama that was his life, he himself was more dramatic than Harry could ever dream of being. Snape was a study in extremes: cold, stone-faced silences and shrieking, hex-hurling, glass-flinging rages, childish sulks and brilliant insights, pointless malice and heart-stopping courage."

Her Harry is no pale shadow next to him either - he is witty, courageous and unusually mature. His maturity and respect for Snape's emotions is unusual in fanfic and an Aucta Sinistra trademark.

I also have to give her credit for one of the best examples of wizarding swear words I've come across: "Hecate's paps, boy, have you forgotten how to dress yourself?"

Summary: This time, Dumbledore sends Snape to Harry's manor for his own protection.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

In a new twist on the old Snape Manor cliche, Snape is sent to Harry's house to hide out. The house is an old manor house full of leftover curses and no small amount of antipathy to its new owner. The plot thickens with Death Eaters after Snape and a couple of original characters complicating the Harry/Snape attraction.

Another wonderful Aucta Sinistra Snarry depicting a damaged, suspicous Snape slowly coming to accept Harry's interest. Four stars. Don't miss the satisfying epilogue, Without Ceremony, found here.

Summary:Harry and Severus get to know one another better. And worse.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

Another of Aucta's Harry-and-Snape-coming-together stories. It's mostly a character study of Snape, angsty and sad. It features one of my favorite Snape permutations - Snape the heavy drinker. Though most of the story takes place during Harry's seventh year the story cannot properly be called chan.

I find Aucta to be one of the best writers of Snape/Harry dialogue out there. It's the type of dialogue that keeps you on the edge of your seat while you alternate between grinning and flinching as Harry and Severus say everything you want them to say. Aucta is a true fan's writer. Four stars

Summary: Harry gets up his nerve.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

The essence of "Snarry." Just months from graduation, Harry witnesses a scene in class that inspires him to approach Snape with his feelings. The dialogue is the the stuff that any Snape/Harry lover eats up. Aucta's Snape leans a bit to the "soft-on-the-inside" but by wrapping him in insecurity she keeps him recognizable.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

Aucta again gives us a perfect Harry and Snape coming together story. It's romance, an insecure Snape, a Gryffindor Harry, a matchmaking Dumbledore, and a nosy McGonagall. Like all Aucta's stories, the writing is sharp and spare. Every word is a pleasure and the Snape/Harry dialogue makes you grin. Four stars!

Summary: Written from Snape’s POV, during the heat of summer in a future world where Dumbledore has died, and Hogwarts is full of refugees.

    Reviewer: Gaycrow

This is a beautiful short story, written in the first person from Snape’s point of view.

During a long hot summer, when Hogwarts is filled with refugees from the presumed war against Voldemort, Harry has started to spend more and more time in Snape’s Dungeons. On his 18th Birthday, things come to a head.

I knew what he was after, of course. Feeling without attachment; some connection to the world, through his skin, through his tongue and hands.

Ellen has captured the heat of summer, the heat of passion, and the hoplessness of the war very well, with just the slightest prospect of a happier outcome.

She has promised a sequel, and I’m very much looking forward to reading the next part of this story.

Summary: Severus Snape is obsessed with his former student and spends his days dreaming and replaying possible sexual scenarios over and over in his mind.

    Reviewer: Absynthia

It has been many years since Harry has graduated from Hogwarts, but Severus Snape still finds himself trapped within his secret obsession for his former student. He pours all his thoughts out in his journal, trying to force them into some semblance of order. His entries alternate between random lists, poorly drawn sketches, and snippets of writing detailing countless imagined scenarios between him and Harry in a kind of rambling poetic style. Ever the martyr, Snape battles internally between his desire and his fear of it.

    -------------------------
I say we are fucking by water and perhaps in water, perhaps waist deep, perhaps to our necks in it. I say we wallow in the shallows (The water is chilly. Your mouth is warm.) and we give and take, we take and give, and, upon rising, discover we have left a perfect impression of our bodies in the sand, like snow-angels. The water fills it. We fill the water and I say something amusing to you. It takes you as awfully funny and we laugh together -- no.

This is serious, deadly serious. We fuck and we stand up and we put on our clothes. We do not indulge in the playful (idiotic) bickering and joking of other couples. I do not like being laughed at, and you respect this. Say we walk along the sand in silence, broken only by you remarking on the shape of a particular shell; holding a conch to your ear you hear echoes of the ocean and say, ‘Professor Sna-’

    Gods, no.

    You are twenty five.

    -------------------------

The whole piece flows so well that it makes it difficult to choose one part out of context to illustrate that here. I'm not sure if this is actually how Snape's mind would work or not, but if so, it would make me love him even more. This is a different kind of story -- there is a definite conflict, but no resolution and really no clear-cut ending, leaving the reader feeling as sad and desperate as Snape himself. Still, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in Snape's inner character. There is a beauty to it, and it is one of the more memorable fanfics I've read.

Summary: Naughty schoolboy Harry and Snape with a paddle.

    Reviewer: Aubrem

This is a dirty story - a very dirty story. It's quintessential young-schoolboy-being-paddled-and-buggered pornography, elegantly written for Harry and Snape. It's perverse (Harry's tears!) and it's searingly hot.

A while back someone polled the fandom as to what fic made them hottest and by my estimate, this was one of the most popular answers. It was an interesting poll because it got a very large response, almost all anonymous, and most of the fic were guilty secrets - chan, bdsm, slavefic. Deep down, though many won't admit it in public, most of us find the kink hot.

Aspen writes chan better than most and this PWP is almost perfect. She even gives us a slight "out" at the end - though she makes us wait for it so that we cannot deny our complicitness in her story. I can't call it the height of characterization or interpersonal analysis, but hot kink it is.

These two stories feature an adult Harry and Severus in an established relationship, though the first part of the story revolves around Harry crashing at Ron's place after a night of drinking. The art of the story is in the subtle revelations about Harry and Severus' relationship as Ron takes care of a completely soused Harry. I love the original take on Harry and Severus' relationship: Harry is unemployed and living off of Snape. They are locked into a cycle of violent arguments, drinking on Harry's part, and making up.

quote: "What did he say, what did you say - then what did you do and what did he do. Oh! -- almost forgot -- what did you break as you slammed the door? By-the-way, you're gonna have to get a job if you keep breaking things like that. Nothing Snape owns is cheap."

Of course, being Icarus, she throws a little Harry/Ron exploration, which I think just adds to the realism of the story. Harry is completely believable here, as is Ron. It's a lovely picture of a friendship.

In the second part Snape arrives, and Icarus' skill with characterization and interrelationships turns to the Snarry. She describes an entire conversation between Harry and Severus without either one speaking a word, and in doing so she manages to portray Severus as apologetic, yet in character. It's delicately done, and indeed one of Icarus' themes seems to be the subtleties of communication as Ron learns to read Severus.

Intelligent, funny, charming, and really an original take on the Snape/Harry relationship. Highly recommended.
