"A Day And A Half In The Life," by Dementor Delta

Title: A Day And A Half In The Life

Summary: Snape and Harry have a very complicated history.

As I was reading this story, I realized that I'd rather have one of Delta's stories than a box full of good chocolate truffles. And one of the reasons came clear to me, today.

Delta only really does stories where Snape and Harry have (what works out to be) a loving, happy, and healthy relationship. And God, is that hard, with these two. And she pulls it off, time after time. It's magic.

If you want to write a happy, loving Snape/Harry relationship, well . . . . at least one of them has to know how to build such a relationship. And you have to give us a character (Snape or Harry) who is able to build a relationship and yet still stay reasonable IC. Now that challenge is a rock that so many fics have run aground on. It's tough. In most Snape/Harry stories, Harry has to do most of the relationship "work," since Snape is clearly so handicapped in taking on that job. And very often (even in adult! Harry fics), he's just unrealistically skilled at building a relationship. It can be too much to believe. Making the relationship work well is simply one of the toughest challenges for a writer in this pairing.

But in Delta's hands, it always works. I've thought again and again why her Harry (even when he has a very uphill job, as in "Dreaming Spires") can pull it off so persuasively, even though he's so young. And I think it's because Delta's Harry can get close to Snape, can establish a sensual and emotional rapport with him, almost without words. That is, she has Harry seduce Snape emotionally with very few words. Rather, he uses non-verbal rapport and physical affection to do the job. And that is very persuasive, even for a younger man.

Here, Harry comes back to Hogwarts at some point in his 20s (date is unspecified, but he's an adult) and takes up where he left off with Snape. They have a lot to work through. But as always in this author's stories, Harry pulls it off, in the end. This story is lovely, sensual, and heart-filling. Enjoy!
